'SiCKO'

no, i do not agree with most of the things michael moore stands for. i certainly don’t share his views on who to vote for, but we are all entitled to our opinions. however, this movie, SICKO, really got me thinking. why don’t we have some type of universal healthcare. i know, i know, i have always thought that universal healthcare would cause our hospitals, doctors and medicine companies to lose the drive to produce new and better medicine. but in the movie it pointed out that our health care is rated 37th in the world, just above slovenia, SLOVENIA (not very desirable). and that many countries including cuba have a lower rate of death among newborns. many countries have national healthcare, dental, college funding and nanny service. then my other thought came up, their taxes must be crazy high. last time i checked, if you are a hard working middle class family you still pay taxes somewhere in the 30%’s, no matter how many kids you have. so paying somewhere in the 40%’s and having no worries about what it will cost if something should happen to you or your kids seems very reasonable. we shouldn’t have to be having to worry about going into debt for the rest of our lives because of having children. heck, in these other countries the doctors make house calls, for free. i have heard the horror stories about people dying while waiting to see a doctor or to get surgery but as usual we only hear about the horror stories. many of these countries focus on preventative medicine, which is just starting to take off here in America, and have a higher life expectancy than we do here in America. the other huge rip off is medicine. for instance, one of the ladies in the movie who worked at ground zero as a volunteer and because she was not on anyone’s payroll she was told there was nothing anyone could do for her. she has been paying $120 for the inhaler she must have. to me $120 does not sound unreasonable but when the group went to cuba to see what would happen they found that the same inhaler that cost $120 in the states only costs her 5 cents, yes, i said 5 FREAKIN’ CENTS (i want to use another word for freakin). it makes me sick. watch the trailer below, watch the movie and hope that you live the rest of your life in absolutely perfect condition because if you don’t you are gambling every-time you call your insurance to see if they will cover that surgery or test. we should be protecting and taking care of those that took care of us, excluding all elected officials working in DC because they are mostly the problem.

I don't think that you can believe any "Fact" that Micheal Moore would espouse in any film at any time.

Use your own life experience instead. For example. You have been around Missionaries your entire life. How many of them have you known that wait till they get on the field to have surgery? vs. How many of them come home (to the US) when they get sick? You know Dr.'s that travel outside the US. Ask them their experience. When was the last time you saw a group of Dr.'s from Slovenia coming on a medical missions trip to Springfield?

Competition creates excellence, and even though in some ways our insurance industry is broken, it is only a piece of the bigger whole.

The last thing I want is for the Medical System to work they way a major governmental institution does. Take even Police for example.

The Police do a great job (shout out to Htuck) however...They can't respond to every call immediately, they have to prioritize their response. Who determines what calls get responded to first? They do. As for me and my family, I would like to determine what the priority is on our health care, not some government bureaucrat who is unelected and untouchable.

I'm afraid you might be getting too much influence from the liberal educators in our public school systems. (now don't get me started on that :-)

Now...Have I sufficiently stepped on both of your toes on this comment? :-)

Maybe we can get some controversy Brewing back on the blogs again...Rider...I'm sure you have something controversial to say...Chime in. Take a page out of my book, and offend some people on here...Lets get this party started!

good blog btuck. my thoughts are, if you can name me one thing that the federal government controls that works 'good' and 'right' or 'the way it should',maybe i would consider supporting universal health care. seriously, we have the best health care in the world. that is a fact!
don't believe the marxist's america haters.

no, i have never been denied for any type of surgery, test, or prescription. however, if you are a senior and must live on several prescription drugs and only have medicare and can't afford part B who knows what your total bill could be. this is where i think we need to be taking care of those that came before us. i DO KNOW that you can get many of the same drugs and a fraction of the cost in other countries, because i did it in cambodia myself. i also know that there are many individuals that go across the border to mexico to get dental work done because there are members inside my family who do it. the dentists are great, the prices are great and the dentists entire customer base comes from the US.

i know that competition creates better medicine but something needs to be done. all i see in springfield is hospitals building and building, why, because they are making so much money as a pseudo profit organization that they have to hide all there profits. the insurance companies have all the power in our country and that must change. the power needs to go back to the policy holders because that is what we pay them for. it's all about how much money they can make, not how much they can help their customers, and that is WRONG!!!

the government has universalized some things such as the mail system and even though it seems that it never stops going up it is still pretty cheap to get something from here to new york or california. ps, i hear it's going up again, better load up on your forever stapms

Let UPS deliver the mail...and see if the cost it goes UP...or Down.

I wasn't completely convinced that Universal Health Care is the way to go but this movie did make you think about things. I know SammyB and COX are the movie reviewers but I think the movie is NOT about the uninsured, it's about the citizens who have a false confidence in their insurance. People with good jobs and good insurance are getting denied medical procedures in an attempt to save the insurance company money. This is nothing new and I think most of us have personal experience or know someone who has had this happen.

And hillenblog, what you said about the Police is true, no offense taken.

The reason other newborn mortality rates are lower than ours is only because we try to save those born prematurely while other countries list those births as miscarriages. However, our maternal death rates are higher because of the number of unnecessary inductions and c-sections. That's a whole other story.

Now on to universal healthcare. I think that we should be responsible for our own health and any price tags that come along with it. We have really bad insurance, $10,000 deductible with no maternity, by choice. We could pay for better insurance but I'm not sure what the point would be. I've learned to walk by faith and pray before I take any of us to the Dr. to make sure it's a necessary visit. It's made me a wiser consumer, I seek out advice and alternative treatments first. I'm getting way better prenatal care from my midwife than I've ever receieved from a Dr. and all for a fraction of the cost. We are the only country that treats childhood ear infections with antibiotics, other countries just treat the pain because they usually (85% of the time) go away on their own. I see such abuse of the healthcare system by those that do have the bill footed by the government already. People are going to the emergency room with things like low grade fevers and stuffed up noses just because they know it's free (to them, not to the taxpayer). That kind of abuse will only get worse when we have universal healthcare. I absolutely believe the industry needs to change, in a big way, but putting the government in charge is not going to fix it.

I wrote that last comment late last night and I now realize how little sense it makes. Sorry!
